VIRTUAL ADOPTION PROCESS

Our virtual adoption application process aims to better help you find a new furry friend from the safety and comfort of your home! With our new system, you only have to provide your information ONCE with which you can apply for multiple pets over time.

Here is how it works: ⁣

1. Visit our homepage and choose dogs or cats. ⁣
2. If you see a pet you love, click on their photo.⁣
3. Click on the “Apply to Adopt” button on their profile. ⁣
4. Click “Sign Up” to create an account.⁣
5. Fill out the questionnaire. This will take about 5-10 minutes. ⁣

Once you are signed up, you can browse and apply for as many pets as you like!

Once you apply, you’ll receive a confirmation email letting you know that we have received your application. All pets are first come, first considered based on when we receive your application. If your application is next in the virtual line, then our counselor will give you a call to discuss the pet and see if they are a good fit for your home.

We ask that you PLEASE read the animal description thoroughly before applying so that you are aware of all restrictions and requirements for that pet.

If a pet you applied for is adopted by someone else, then you’ll receive an email notification letting you know that pet is no longer available.

If your adoption is approved, there will be a processing fee of 5% of the adoption price. After the first 7 days post-adoption, all adoption fees are non-refundable. ⁣Adopters must be prepared to pick up the animal that day or within 48 hours at the latest.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this unusual time!

Three Basic Steps To

Pet Adoption

1) Meet our adoptable pets!
Loving matches take time (just ask a divorce lawyer)! Please plan on 1-2 hours for the whole adoption process.

2) Meet our dedicated matchmakers!
They will share what we know about the pet and are trained to make the best matches for our pets and for you. We learn about your household, lifestyle and expectations to help ensure a successful match. If necessary, our medical heroes will provide a medical consultation too.

3) Complete the adoption and bring your new love home!
You’ll review the adoption contract, medical record, etc. We can also answer any questions you may have about bringing your pet home, introducing it lovingly into your home and family, and provide additional resources. You’re now part of our SPCA family too, so call our Pet Help Line with any questions!

Adopt a Pet

Successful matches take time

Please plan on allowing adequate time to be matched with a pet, have relevant conversations with our adoption counselors, and complete all necessary paperwork. This can take 1-2 hours.

  • You must be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must complete an adoption application and meet with an adoption counselor.
  • You must show a picture ID with a current address. (If this isn’t available, then we’ll accept a picture ID with a current utility bill).
  • A conducted meet-and-greet with current household dogs is required for some dogs.

Potential Adoptions (PA)

People who are interested in adopting a pet that is not yet available may fill out the PA hold form.

  • A PA can only be placed in person after you’ve met the pet. We cannot place a PA on a pet via a phone call, email, or other means of electronic communication.
  • Only one PA name will be placed per animal, and a family may only place their name on one dog at a time (multiple cats or kittens is okay).
  • We are not able to put a PA on a pet under 2 pounds or 2 months of age.
  • Please note that dogs and puppies are not eligible for PA until they have had a behavioral assessment. (Pets returned for aggression of any kind are not eligible for this process.)
  • If you are called about adopting the animal, you will need to return to the adoption center to complete the adoption paperwork that same day.
  • Standard adoption criteria and fees apply.
  • PA’s will not be placed for people who are not a good match for the pet based on the behavioral assessment.
  • If the animal is too young to be altered it will need to go out to foster. If this is the case, please understand that the foster will have first choice of adopting.
  • PA’s will not be placed for people who are indecisive because we need to give each pet their best chance at finding a loving home quickly.
  • No adoption guarantee is expressed or implied.
