Frequently Asked Questions

To adopt a dog, visit the Adoption Center open daily from 12 PM to 6 PM. The process includes meeting adoptable pets, consulting with matchmakers to ensure a good fit, and completing the necessary paperwork.

Adoption fees vary based on the dog’s age:

  • Puppies (less than 6 months): $200
  • Adult Dogs (6 months – 7 years): $75
  • Senior Dogs (over 7 years): $40

Discounts on adult pets are available for seniors, active military, veterans, and Nevada teachers.

The adoption fee includes spaying/neutering, vaccinations, microchipping, a medical examination, and completed medical care.

Adoption applications are processed in-person on a first-come, first-serve basis. A two-hour potential Adoption (PA) hold can be placed after meeting the pet (excluding puppies).

Adopters must be at least 18 years old, complete an adoption application, and provide a photo ID with a current address. A meet-and-greet with current household dogs and children is required for most dogs to ensure compatibility.

Consider your lifestyle, expectations, and ability to meet the dog’s needs. Questions to ask yourself include:

  • What is my motivation to adopt this dog?
  • What are my expectations for my new companion?
  • Is my home and lifestyle a good fit for this dog?
  • How much time and effort can I dedicate to a new dog?
  • Am I prepared for any special needs the dog may have?

The SPCA of Northern Nevada offers post-adoption support through our help desk line, online resources, and discounted training and behavioral consultations. Some dogs may qualify for free behavioral support with a pet behaviorist. Online resources include the Pet Behavior Help section and the Pet Education and Resources hub.

The SPCA of Northern Nevada makes a lifetime commitment to their animals and will always take them back, regardless of the circumstances.
