We love our volunteers and the amazing ways they help us save lives. Each volunteer has a unique experience here at the SPCA of Northern Nevada and we like to celebrate their voices via our blog. If you would like to volunteer, please visit our Volunteer Page or if you are a volunteer and would like to write for our blog, please contact Angela at Angela@spcanevada.org.
A little over 4 years ago, I was asked to advise a service-orientated group of kids from our high school. I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but I soon fell in love with working with dogs. As heartbreaking as some of their back stories can be, it is easily as heart warming/rewarding to hear when they find their forever homes. It seems like there is always someone out there for each of the dogs-it just takes longer for some than others. As a long time volunteer, I think I still learn something new each time I’m up there. I enjoy mentoring and helping others move up in color status, but I love the play groups the most. Here is a picture of Silver (a dog we had a few times and longer than some) and another dog. They were both handfuls in kennels but a blast to play with in the yard. Look how nicely he is sitting waiting for a ball…and how snow covered each are. When I went back the next day, I found out both had been adopted separately the day before. ( I have to admit I also have a soft spot for the super shy/timid ones; how great it is to see when they break out of their shells and start acting like dogs.)Volunteering at SPCA is one of the most rewarding things I have done and will continue to do. It has also given me an opportunity to meet a lot of great people who love animals.
