4/09/25 Update

We continue to prevail and have some exciting new updates on our construction process. The best part? We’re officially reopening! See all the latest updates below:

Facility Repairs & Progress

  • The boiler system is officially up and running, and the majority of HVAC repairs are nearly complete, with final adjustments scheduled for next week. These improvements will provide a more comfortable, energy-efficient space for both our pets and visitors.
  • Construction of our new Pet Dental Suite is coming along beautifully. The framing is complete, and over the next few weeks, we’ll be installing insulation, windows, drywall, and more. This dedicated space will allow us to provide dental care to more of our pets waiting for adoption.
  • Outside, we’re still awaiting final fencing for our play yards, but steady progress continues. These upgraded activity and enrichment areas offer essential space for our pets to decompress and thrive while they wait for loving homes.
  • Inside the Adoption Center, our animal prep areas are getting a fresh start. We’ve remodeled the dog prep side with upgraded tools and more efficient layouts to better support our staff and streamline daily care routines.

Team Development & Community Engagement

Throughout this closure, our dedicated team has remained deeply engaged. Staff from all departments have pitched in at the Thrift Store, helping increase sales and fund our lifesaving mission. Meanwhile, our animal care teams have continued traveling to rural rescue partners to provide hands-on support and strengthen our collaborative efforts. Behind the scenes, we’ve been hard at work improving internal systems to ensure a smooth, successful reopening and optimize efficiency in the future.

Estimated Reopening

Thanks to the unwavering support of our community and the dedication of our team, we’re thrilled to announce that we will officially reopen on Monday, April 14—with new hours of operation! We’ll now be open seven days a week, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
*Please note: We will be closed on the first Tuesday of every month for essential staff development and coordination.

We’re beyond grateful for your patience and support throughout this process. The finish line is in sight, and we can’t wait to welcome you back on Monday, April 14th!

3/12/25 Update

Our team continues to work hard for pets and people in need! We’re excited to share some important updates on our Adoption Center repairs, new pet dental suite and estimated reopening.

Facility Repairs & Progress

We’re making big, necessary repairs to our Adoption Center. Here’s what’s been happening:

  • HVAC Overhaul: Our entire heating and ventilation system is undergoing critical replacement and repairs. This complicated process must be finished before we can reopen our Adoption Center and Clinic to homeless pets, and we’re almost there!
  • Boiler Repairs: Essential boiler system repairs are also almost completed, which are necessary to keep pets in our care cozy and comfortable.
  • Pet Dental Suite Construction: Despite weather delays, this multi-faceted project is progressing nicely. This additional space in our multi-purpose room will allow us to provide more cost-effective dental care to more SPCA-NN pets to reduce their pain, and improve their general health and life expectancy!
  • Activity Yard Repairs: Turf repairs and new fencing will improve these spaces and reduce stress for our dogs while they’re waiting for loving homes. Our largest yard is getting new fencing during our closure, and the rest will be done during the next few months.
  • Storage & Flooring Repairs: Sturdier, long-lasting storage cabinets and flooring repairs are progressing nicely and our Team is excited to start installing the new metal cabinets!
  • Pet Care Prep Area Repairs: New stainless-steel base cabinets, sink, counter, and backsplashes will be installed soon, completing essential repairs that will last a longtime and improve our efficiency.

Team Development & Community Engagement

During the closure, our team has been stepping up in big ways for partner organizations to support pets in need. From delivering food and essential supplies to local shelters to assisting with pet care, enrichment training, and facility upkeep, we remain dedicated to making a positive impact in our community.

At the same time, we are committed to continuous growth through ongoing training and development. By refining workflows, optimizing workspaces, and implementing new training programs, our team is gaining valuable skills and tools to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. These improvements will not only elevate the care we provide to homeless pets but also strengthen our ability to serve the community that makes our mission possible.

Estimated Reopening

While construction timelines may continue to shift, we plan to start intaking homeless pets and doing surgeries in the last week of March.

This means that we should be able to reopen to the public in early to mid-April.

In the meantime, our team will be working diligently to prepare for a seamless transition! Thank you for your patience and support, we can’t wait to welcome you back and continue our mission of saving lives together!

2/13/25 Update

We are excited to share an update on what we’ve been up to during our temporary closure! Over the past two weeks, our team has been hard at work making improvements to ensure we can serve even more pets and people in our community when we reopen.

Strengthening Our Team

We are using this time to invest in our staff through additional training and development. By analyzing department efficiencies, reorganizing workspaces, and implementing new training modules for the entire team, we are creating a more effective and knowledgeable workforce. These improvements will allow us to provide even better care to homeless pets and the people who love them.

Enhancing Our Facility

Thanks to the generosity of our community partners, we have made significant progress on crucial building improvements:

  • Pet Dental Suite: Demolition is underway for our brand-new pet dental suite, made possible by Nevada ICF and Hector Gamboa. This addition will allow us to provide more in-house dental care, relieving pain and improving the quality of life for more pets in need.
  • Dog Care Renovation: We have also started demolition on the dog care prep area, making it larger and more efficient. This expansion will enable us to accommodate and care for more dogs in a safer environment.
  • HVAC Improvements: CustomAir is leading the charge on our HVAC project, ensuring our ventilation systems are thoroughly cleaned and repaired. These updates will create a healthier space for both pets and people.

Looking Ahead

Every improvement we make—whether through training our team or enhancing our facilities—is focused on the same goal: to better serve pets and the people who love them. We are taking this time to refine our operations so we can hit the ground running when we reopen, providing even greater support to our community.

Thank you for your continued support as we work behind the scenes to build a stronger SPCA of Northern Nevada. We can’t wait to welcome you back soon!

1/20/25 Update

Hello SPCA-NN Community,

As always, SPCA of Northern Nevada puts pets first! Life can suddenly throw unexpected challenges our way, but when we look at it right, challenges can provide invaluable opportunities to grow and improve. This is one of those times for SPCA-NN because we must temporarily close our Adoption Center in February for urgent air handler replacement and necessary HVAC repairs. These essential and extensive repairs will make our Adoption Center uninhabitable to animals and people for about 4 weeks. Our last day open to the public will be February 2nd.

If you’re considering bringing a new pet into your home, please adopt one of our available pets now! Since we won’t be able to house any pets during construction, we are working hard to get them into loving homes, and we need your help! Adopt a Pet HERE.

Please adopt and/or sign up to foster a homeless pet this week! Foster HERE.

SPCA-NN will always make a lifetime commitment to our pets, and we’ll continue to accept SPCA-NN adoption returns for any reason during our Adoption Center closure. We’re grateful that February is historically a lower homeless pet intake month and thanks to our valuable fosters and partners, we’ll be able to continue taking SPCA-NN alumni returns* as necessary and place the most at-risk pets into foster homes. How to Surrender HERE. *We’ll provide more information on how and where we’ll take returns soon.

As a result of these urgent repairs, we cannot do any in-house, affordable community spay/neuter surgeries (SNYPS) for February, which means there aren’t any available SNYPS appointments in February.

SPCA-NN will always remain committed to pets and supporting our community and we will continue our Spay/Neuter Voucher Program in February! 80 spay/neuter vouchers will be available for redemption at our fabulous partner clinics for the same low pricing: $130 for dogs and $50 for cats. Applications for these vouchers will open at 8 a.m. on February 11th. Apply HERE.

We are also taking advantage of this mandatory closing to build a pet dental suite to provide more homeless pets with oral pain relief, better health, and improve their adoptability! During the last two years, homeless pet populations have increased while large dog adoptions have decreased regionally. We need to do everything we can to decrease the time it takes to get our pets (especially large dogs) into loving homes.

Despite our Adoption Center closure, we will continue our mission to save and improve the lives of pets in northern Nevada! Our highly trained SPCA-NN Teams will be helping our partner organizations care for their pets. We will help Washoe County Regional Animal Services (WCRAS) care for their increased number of homeless pets. Our veterinarian surgical team will conduct spay/neuter surgeries on a remote Native American Reservation. And we will help Options Nonprofit Veterinary Clinic provide affordable spay/neuter surgeries, wellness exams, vaccines, microchips, and more!

We’ll also increase efficiencies, continue high-level trainings, add more free pet resources to our website, and find more ways to support pets and their people in our community.

Please follow our social media accounts and emails as we share stories of impactful collaborations to help at-risk pets and their people in northern Nevada!

Our Thrift Store operations will continue as usual and many of our incredible Adoption Center volunteers are excited to help our Thrift Store team! It is vital that our community continue supporting and donating to SPCA-NN during this time as our monthly overhead expenses will continue and our operations revenues will cease. Shop Thrift Store HERE.

Please consider adopting, fostering, donating, and shopping at our Thrift Store to support our lifesaving mission during this critical period.

Please understand that closing our Adoption Center and SNYPS program in February is extremely difficult for us too, but there is no other option. Your continued support during this difficult time will enable us to reopen and serve pets in need better than ever!

Thank you in advance for your ongoing support, kindness, and understanding!

With gratitude,

SPCA of Northern Nevada
