There's no place like home.

The Housing Crisis and Pet Surrenders

Sometimes life hands us unexpected situations beyond our control, and we have no choice but to rehome a beloved pet. Especially now during the current housing crisis, increasing nationwide inflation, and all-time unemployment rates, for many people these unexpected situations happen very quickly. And suddenly, rehoming becomes too difficult and pet owners become desperate and surrender to a local shelter, which can feel devastating for the person, and stressful for the pet. And sometimes pets need a different home environment to thrive and rehoming is the best solution for them.

At the SPCA of Northern Nevada (SPCA-NN), we understand these incredible challenges and believe that rehoming a pet shouldn’t have to feel impossible. Home To Home™ and its affiliated partners (including SPCA-NN) want you to know there is NEW support available to help with pet rehoming. While a difficult decision for pet guardians, it is possible to rehome your pet and avoid any length of stay at an animal shelter.

Last year, between January 1st and October 31st, the animal charity received 42,000 inquiries from dog owners about rehoming. This is a rise of almost 50% from the same period in 2021.

What is Home to Home?

Home To Home™ is a direct-to-adopter online platform that easily and safely helps people and pets with the difficult task of transitioning a pet from one home into another. This platform exists to help those who may be struggling with this responsibility and has also enlisted the help of animal shelters throughout the country, like SPCA-NNThis robust online community also helps relieve overburdened shelters since currently, adoption rates are flat, but intakes and average lengths of stay are increasing.

The online platform works by allowing an individual to post a profile with pictures of their pet,  which are then listed and shared with others who are interested in fostering or adopting. The overall mission is to keep animals out of shelters and provide a larger community than the guardian’s own friends and family network.

This is a great alternative to Craigslist or social media as it is a safer and more reliable means of getting in contact with people who are seriously considering a pet. It also includes all types of pets–not just dogs and cats.

As an Adoption Center whose mission includes finding homeless pets the loving homes they deserve, SPCA-NN endorses and encourages people to use Home To Home™ to mitigate the number of pets surrendered to a shelter environment. Not only does this service reduce both pet and owners’ stress during the rehoming transition, but it gives potential new pet owners a chance to learn more about the pets directly from the current guardian.
