Academic Volunteer Options

If you are volunteering to fulfill an academic requirement, there are three options for service:

Shelter Basics &/or Thrift Store:

At the Adoption Center: You will be cleaning public common areas, individual rooms, windows, hallways, bathrooms, mopping, sanitizing doors/handles/floors/rooms, restocking closets, doing laundry, dishes, sweeping and cleaning the grounds, pulling weeds, and assisting kennel attendants with basic janitorial tasks to assist in keeping the animals temporary home a healthy environment (7am-12pm, 7 days a week).

At the Thrift Store: You will be cleaning public common areas, windows, hallways,  bathrooms, mopping, sweeping and cleaning the grounds, emptying trash, and breaking down boxes.  You will be assisting donors in unloading merchandise, carrying merchandise to the stockroom, sorting merchandise, stocking merchandise, and organizing the merchandise on the sales floor. Must be 15 years old or older

(10am-6pm, 7 days a week).

Animal Socialization & Special Events:

To be able to complete your required hours working with the animals you must commit to at least 20 hours of service regardless of how many hours you need for your scholastic requirement. Training time is not included in the total 20 hours. To work with the animals is a privilege and training resources are limited so we must know that you are committed to making a difference in the animals’ lives for a substantial period of time. The Volunteer Manager will NOT sign off on any hours, unless you have fulfilled your minimum commitment of 20 hours. This includes our Study with a Buddy program.

Vaccine Clinic Commitment:

If your availability is limited and you are looking for a more structured type of commitment, then you are eligible to volunteer with our Vaccine Clinic team. You must contribute a minimum of TWO days a month (Sat/Sun/Tues) for the full 5 hours Saturday and Sunday (10am-3pm), or the full 3 hours on Tuesdays (4-7pm) for the duration of the semester (i.e. 3-6 months). This option could earn you up to 30 hours in just 3 months if not more. The Volunteer Manager will NOT sign off on any hours, unless you have fulfilled your minimum commitment of two days a month for at least 3 months.

Completion of your hours: It is your responsibility to keep track of your own hours. If you forget to sign in and/or out, then you will not receive credit for that volunteer day. So please don’t forget! You know how many hours are to be completed and the date they are due. When you need your time sheet and/or any paperwork signed you must request it from the Volunteer Manager. Do not wait until the last minute to request your hours, the Volunteer Manager works primarily Monday through Friday, and you must give notice in advance to be sure that she is available to fulfill your request.
